Java Sparrow

I took a picture of another bird that is quite common in parks around Honolulu.

This is a Java sparrow (Padda oryzivora) in the Estrildid (waxbill finch) family, like zebra finches.  Their specific epithet, oryzivora, means "rice eater" and they are often seen in groups picking up grass seeds.  They are from Indonesia where they are threatened in the wild.  They are illegal to possess in California and importing to the US is banned.  However, they seem to be doing fine in the wild here in Oahu.

Here is another one just outside our local library.
